ACR is an open standard PC communications riser card specification, jointly promoted by VIA Technologies, Inc together with other leading industry players such as 3Com, AMD, Lucent, Motorola, nVidia, PCTel, Texas Instruments and others. Introduced as a much-needed update and extension to the 1998 AMR specification, ACR significantly extends AMR's communications and networking capabilities while retaining full AMR compatibility. ACR simplifies today's PC communications functions into a single riser card that can be customized to include modem, Ethernet, Home PNA (phoneline networking), ADSL, wireless networking, and audio functions. ACR riser cards are designed to fit into a standard PCI slot eliminating the need for special connectors, further simplifying industry adoption. "ACR provides OEMs and system integrators with the fastest, most flexible and cost-effective solution for customizing the communications features on their PC products," commented Eric Chang, Director of Product Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. "We are working very closely with our industry partners to enable the widespread implementation of the open ACR standard onto the market." "Numerous communications technologies are becoming standard features in next generation PCs. The market needs a cost effective way to integrate and consolidate these functions. The ACR Specification provides just that," said Bert McComas, founder of InQuest Market Research. "It enables the means to cost reduce or to enhance and accelerate audio and communications functions in whatever combination suits the OEM or the end user. Establishing an advanced open standard for riser cards results in an unprecedented opportunity for differentiation, flexibility and innovation." All ACR Special Interest Group members play an equally important role in bringing this new communications spec to market, from board level implementation to the manufacture of riser cards. For its part, VIA Technologies is working at the grassroots motherboard implementation level. Leveraging its close working relationship with the world's leading motherboard manufacturers puts VIA in a unique position to ensure ACR enabled motherboards will quickly hit critical mass volumes by Q3 - Q4 2000. About ACR Special Interest Group The ACR Special Interest Group (ACR SIG) manages the development of the ACR Specification. The ACR SIG is an open, not-for-profit organization representing the microcomputer industry. ACR SIG membership is open to the microcomputer industry.
